Mo Tide? – Mari camera dictionary

A new app from the lab: Mo Tide? (“What is this?”), a camera dictionary of the Meadow Mari language. Point the camera at an object or pick a photo from the gallery: numbers appear on the objects, and Mari words with translations appear under the photo.

What it does
- Recognises hundreds of objects: people and facial features, animals and birds, dishes, furniture, clothes, vehicles, fruit, trees, sky, grass and water. Up to 8 objects in one photo.
- Shows the word, its stress, the Russian translation and a definition from the 10-volume Dictionary of the Mari Language (MarNIIYaLI).
- Live mode: labels right in the viewfinder.
- You can save the labelled picture (the “Мо тиде” folder in the gallery) and share it with friends.
- Works offline: recognition runs on the phone and photos are never uploaded.
Words missing from the academic dictionary were added from the FU-Lab online dictionaries and Wiktionary; they are marked with ⚠. Recognition can make mistakes, and some translations are still waiting for a native speaker’s check.
