What is it? – English by camera

After the Mari and Tatar camera dictionaries, here is one for Russian speakers learning English: What is it? Point the camera at an object or pick a photo from the gallery: numbers appear on the objects, and below the photo you get the English word with its article, the IPA transcription and the Russian translation.

Kitchen: a refrigerator, a kettle, a muga cat, a dogDesk

What it does

  • Recognises hundreds of things: people, animals and birds, dishes, furniture, clothes, vehicles, fruit, trees, sky and water. Up to 8 objects per photo.
  • Shows the word with its article (a cat, an apple, water), the IPA transcription and the Russian translation with stress; the “i” button opens a Wiktionary definition.
  • Live mode: English words right in the viewfinder.
  • Save and share labelled pictures.
  • Works offline: photos are never uploaded.

Words, transcriptions and translations come from the English and Russian Wiktionary; narrow model labels (dog breeds, snake species) are reduced to everyday words such as dog and snake. Entries confirmed by one source only are marked ⚠.
